Do It With Your Eyes Closed

I have been teaching a beginner pottery class this month (my favorite class to teach perhaps) along with a bit of summer camp. Regardless of age, I frequently find myself giving the same advice to folks struggling on the wheel.

“Close your eyes.”

Here’s why: ceramics (and so much of life, as it turns out) is very intuitive. Once you understand the process, one should relax into and resist overthinking. You don’t need all the senses at once, you just need the right ones at the right time. The rest of it is allowing a bit of flow.

Kids and adults alike have given this a try, with almost always results that are as good or better than their previous thrown objects. The oohs and ahhs that result when the eyes reopen are super fun. So are blindfolds for those of us who can’t quite muster up enough self-control.

Here’s my thought for the week: When you’re stuck with something, creative or otherwise, close your eyes. Take a figurative step back, remove a sense, and see if your intuition, higher self, and gut instinct can take hold and guide you down the right path.

Happy sweating, ya’ll.

We’re open the following hours for pickup of any/all ceramics work from the spring session. Any work that is left in August will get boxed and, eventually, tossed out. We hate to do this, so please come and get items you’ve worked so hard for.

All weekdays in July/August 9am - 3pm (summer programs will be happening but you can sneak in quietly to get things up front). some evenings, and Saturday 9 - 1pm Saturday, Sunday 9 - 4.
