air breathing (2024)
Pages from “The Adaptation of the Newborn Infant to Extauterine Life,” 1964, H.E. Stenfert Kroese N.V., Tracing paper, Fishing wire , Surgical steri strips , Surgical sutures
This is about the adaptation of our bodies at the moment we are born; to metamorphosize from aquatic to air breathing in an instant! It is about the play between the things that we do understand and the things that we do not understand about this transformational moment in our biology.
Artist Statement
I love the connection between art and science. Between the measurable and the not measurable! Between what we can understand with analysis and data versus the mystery and magic of the unknown. I love that I am able to divide my days as a healthcare provider and use very concrete knowledge to share and hopefully help people grow and be well AND also spend time each day creating and entering a completely different part of my mind and spirit. During my art making, I usually hope to surrender to a different realm where I can experiment w materials and color and form and allow parts of ideas come that only are able to present in this more visual and interactive way.
