OPEN Call 2024: Rebirth, Reimagine

Rebirth, Reimagine

Roslindale, Boston, MA

The only constant in life is change.  Every aspect of life shifts in large and small ways. Buildings and communities undergo the same shifts and changes over time that individuals experience. This exhibition aims to celebrate the spirit of change and reimagining that happens all around us.

We’re seeking work of any medium that expresses a sense of rebirth, reimagination, and renewal.  This one month exhibition will occur during Roslindale Open studios to maximize the visibility and impact. Occurring at the The Substation’s main level, 3800 square feet with 34 foot ceilings,  we encourage submitted artworks to encompass both the large and the small, transforming yet highlighting the space. We encourage entries from BIPOC/ALAANA and LGBTQ+ artists.

Artist awards will total $1000.

Artists are not expected to create new site specific works.

Artists will likely be required to participate in the installation/deinstallation of their work. The space allows for artwork to hang high from poles, from ceilings, sit on pedestals and high ledges. There are limited flat-wall hanging opportunities.

This exhibition is being produced by: Substation Community Supporters, in partnership with Create: Art in Community and Croney Moses Designs.

About The Substation

The Substation powers a dynamic and warm community space by uniquely combining coworking, innovative activations, and a collaborative approach to programming. The substation lies in the heart of our neighborhood. It’s architecture is iconic and bold. Likewise we aim to do a lot with all 7100 square feet.

Substation Community Supporters, Inc. was recently established with a clear and focused mission to make arts and cultural programming more available and affordable to artists and our community, and to help fund the historic preservation of the iconic substation building in Roslindale.

This organization will secure grants and donations to make The Substation more available to local artists, performers, and producers, particularly BIPOC/ALAANA and LGBTQ+ community members by reducing or eliminating rental fees for them. Funding will also help subsidize the high operating and maintenance costs associated with managing a historic site to keep programming low cost or free to the public.
